Light Our Sky: 30th November 2019

Electric Theatre to Light our Sky with community lantern parade this November Supported by the National Lottery Community Fund and ACM – The Academy of Contemporary Music, the parade will bring music and willow lanterns to the town centre on November 30th and everyone is invited to join the carnival of woodland animals.

Jennie Surmeli from the Electric Theatre says “We are delighted to have secured lottery funding with Lockwood Artists group to deliver lantern making workshops with schools and community organisations across town, to make beautiful animal creations to be carried through the high street by families, children and members of the public in a real community spectacle – we hope with local support to make this an annual event for Guildford and we encourage everyone to join us”.

Lantern workshops will take place at the Electric Theatre, The Tunsgate Centre and the library throughout October and November and local people are encouraged to make a willow and tissue paper lantern with artists and join the parade, which will feature ACM’s in-house Samba band, food and craft stalls “This is a great opportunity for our students to bring music to the community and share in a very special evening, we are delighted to support this event and hope we can support future events in partnership with local arts organisations” says Toby Drummond, ACM’s music tutor leading the band.

Local Guildford artists have received training from lantern experts Same Sky, who deliver the iconic annual Burning the Clocks lantern festival in Brighton local artist Gina Miller explains “the project has really inspired local artists to come together to make something quite special for Guildford, all ages and abilities can make lanterns with us, it’s a very accessible project”.

The parade leaves the Electric Theatre at 4.30pm on Saturday 30th November.
